With this short and simple message, below, one of the most enduring mysteries to fascinate the Scottish media and public for the past 15 years has finally been resolved.

A police spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police can confirm that the body found in the house in Margate, Kent on November 12 is that of Vicky Hamilton. ”

A man has been arrested in July 2007 and charged in connection with the disappearance of Vicky Hamilton and a report submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

So there it is. Vicky Hamilton’s fate seemed destined to never be explained. Her last photo, which dominated newspapers at the time of her disappearance, is seared on my mind and I suspect on that of all the other journalists who were working in Scotland at the time.

I never expected this case to be solved. At last it has been. Too late for Vicky’s mum, who died a number of years ago, without learning what became of her daughter, but at last some sort of resolution for her dad Michael.

Now he will be looking for justice to be done and the upcoming trial is almost certain to dominate the media all over again – ensuring the disappearance of a young girl in West Lothian to the discovery of her body 16 years later at the opposite end of the country will become a macabre cause celebre for a completely new generation.
