Extra, extra! Read all about it! Why newspaper billboards still work in a digital age

It’s ironic  that it should be something as old-fashioned as a newspaper billboard that has me blogging now.

It’s ironic that this media throwback, spotted in Leith, should now be adding to the implausible weight of sheer guff online over  the unsurprising death of  a moonwalking, suspected molestor.

However, of all the sick jokes, shocked headlines, teary tributes and othe materil being produced, this one picture most caught my eye.

My heart will always belong to newspapers. And moreover to the newspaper where I started my journalistic journey (probably to a Thriller soundtrack!) – T he Evening News in Edinburgh.

So this Evening News billboard pleased me no end. How unashamedly  “old media”. How unaffected by the public penchant for showy grief.   How deliciously non-pc.

How Leith.

Fantastic. I well remember the fear factor of writing blunder-free bills at the EN with seconds to spare and a series of wide-necked ranting maniacs bawling at you to get them sent down to Newhaven.
