More bad news for Frank Gilbride

Posted by scottdouglas on February 1, 2008

News reaches me that the staff at Cover Story - Frank Gilbride’s features operation in Northern Ireland - have finally lost the will to live and resigned en masse.

Awright, there were only two of them, so the reality is that they have resigned en deux, en brace or en both.

Whatever way you pronounce it, this isn’t very en sweet (aye, dreadful pun, I know) for Mr Gilbride who has already consigned his Newsflash empire to the crapper.

Now, far be it from me to engage in gossip, tittle-tattle or general scutwork and scurril (naw, seriously) but the moles in the camp say this wasn’t a planned shutdown.

Rather the Norren Iren pair simply could no longer bear to work for Frank in the wake of  the unpleasant treatment meted out to their former colleagues at Newsflash in Edinburgh.

As a reminder, the staff (including 15 year veterean Jenny Morrison and eight-year loyal time served Photographer Callum Moffatt) were summoned in on a Friday afternoon and told their jobs were being shed. Immediately.

Oh aye, I nearly forgot: the one-time hugely profitable business had reached such parlous straits (without any prior signs or warning) that they’d all be expected to leave with no pay-off, no wages and no expenses. Charming.

Wherefore now for Frank? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sensibly the two Irish girls waited till this months cash was in the bank before walking out.

Wouldn’t be surprised if they went out on their own.

Cover story also closed their Dublin office, without any notice, a few months ago - throwing another two Journos onto the dole.

Yes indeed the girls did wait until they were paid before walking, but one of them was only paid for 3 weeks, you see she was in hospital for an operation, and the grubby Gilbride fellow claimed he could not pay her sick pay while she was off. Gilbride has apparently set up a company buying houses from people in trouble with their mortgage and on the brink of having their home repossessed, he moves in, buys at a huge discount and rents the property back to the them, trouble is after a while he can kick them out and sell at a huge profit. I expect we will read about him in the Sunday mail or News of the screws in a few years.

Frank cirling shark-like round struggling home owners?

    Surely not!

Any truth in the rumour Frank’s remaining media outlet has had their mobile phones cut off?

We are looking for any contact info on Callum Moffat if you have it. We were in the middle of invoices and usage rights with Newsflash, and would like to use a shot of Moffat’s. If you have any info on him please let me know,

    Thanks
